With technology excelling at a rapid rate, unfortunately, vintage alarm clocks have been replaced by cell phone alarms.

That's not to say they aren't available; they're just harder to come by. Also, because you don't see them advertised anymore, it's hard to determine which one you should purchase.

Hence why I've created this article.

Read until the end, and you'll learn about the five best classic alarm clocks in 2021. I'll highlight the pros, cons, best features and provide you with an in-depth review of each.

For the people who are short on time, my top pick is the Crosley Corsair Tabletop Alarm Clock. Not only does it double up as a radio, but it has dual alarms.

Nothing screams retro like the Crosley Corsair Tabletop Alarm Clock. This thing looks like it was pulled straight out of a 1960's American diner.

Talk about a blast from the past!

Apart from the eye-catching design, it has a built-in radio and alarm clock. The radio has a strong reception and picks up FM and AM stations that some other radios can't tune into.

What's more, it has dual alarms, letting you wake up at different times on the weekends. Also, the digital screen isn't too bright at night, so you can sleep easily if you decide to put it next to your bed.

The only problem is the clock face is difficult to read, especially if you have difficulty seeing without glasses. This isn't ideal if you wake up during the night and want to check the time.

In future models, I'd like to see a larger display screen.

In addition, some customers found it difficult to set up and change between the radio and CD settings. With that being said, there is an instruction manual included in your purchase; however, it's going to take some getting used to.

Pros:

  • Amazing vintage design
  • Strong AM and FM radio connection
  • The digital screen isn't too bright
  • Dual alarms let you wake up at different times

Cons:

  • The digital display clock numbers are small, making them difficult to read
  • Setting up this alarm clock isn't easy and requires the instruction manual

Kikkerland Retro Alarm Clock

Best Feature: Simple to Operate

While this one doesn't include as many features as the Crosley Corsair Alarm Clock, it still looks great on your bedside cabinet.

When you purchase this retro alarm clock, you get something that is simple and easy to set up. There aren't lots of buttons and a confusing instruction manual.

The alarm itself isn't loud enough to give you a heart attack but will still get you out of bed in the morning.

What's more, the compact design makes it great for traveling. It fits in the palm of your hand and doesn't weigh a ton.

However, if you find a ticking sound relaxing, you may want to choose a different alarm clock. It's designed for people who enjoy sleeping without distractions.

Pros:

  • Simple and easy to set up
  • Compact and lightweight design
  • Great for traveling
  • Loud enough to wake you up in the morning

Cons:

  • Not recommended for people who have difficulty hearing alarm clocks
  • Doesn't have a soft ticking noise

Seiko 2" Square Alarm Clock

Best Feature: Loud Enough to Wake People with Ear Plugs

This alarm clock isn't as pretty as the Kikkerland; however, it still has a great classic look to it. The clock hands and numbers are large enough to read without glasses and will illuminate in the dark.

The alarm itself has four continuous bleeps until switched off. While it won't wake the heaviest of sleepers, it'll get the average person out of bed. In fact, it's loud enough to wake you up with earplugs in.

What's more, it's dead silent.

For some people, this is a downside; however, for others, it's an amazing benefit.

Similar to the Kikkerland, it's also very easy to set up. You can set the alarm by twisting the alarm button on the back counter-clockwise. If you want to change the time, you can also use the button on the back.

In terms of downsides, it doesn't have a snooze option.

But what do you expect from a vintage clock, right!?

Also, some customers found it difficult to set the alarm. This is because setting the alarm requires pushing the dial on the back in a little and then turning it counter-clockwise.

On the flip side, when setting the time, you need to pull it out and turn it.

Pros:

  • Four continuous beeps until switched off
  • Easy to set up (only have one button for alarm and time)
  • Illuminating hands in the dark
  • It still wakes you up if wearing earplugs

Cons:

  • Some customers found it difficult to set the alarm
  • Does have a snooze option

FirsTime & Co. Teal Double Bell Alarm

Best Feature: Button Activated Clock Light

Apart from the eye-catching rustic look, this clock also has a soft ticking noise, which is great for people who find it relaxing. However, if you're not keen on a faint ticking noise when trying to sleep, then I don't recommend this clock.

Attached to the top are two bells. While you'd think they sound when the alarm goes off, they're only for display. This can be disappointing for some people.

It runs on two AA batteries which aren't included in your purchase.

On the back is a button, letting you illuminate the clock during the night. I like this feature because it gives you the option to activate the light.

Some clocks have a backlight that stays illuminated 24/7, making it difficult to sleep.

In terms of downsides, some customers found the second-hand doesn't always work.

Pros:

  • Soft ticking noise for relaxation
  • A classic and rustic look
  • Button to illuminate the clock at night
  • Runs on two AA batteries

Cons:

  • Two bells attached to the top aren't connected to the alarm
  • Some customers found the second-hand doesn't always work

Retro Wooden Alarm Clock

Best Feature: Doubles Up as a Music Player

Check Price on Amazon

If you're looking for a blast from the past, then this alarm clock is perfect. It looks like a mini TV from the 1950s and doubles up as a music player.

Who said a vintage clock couldn't boast modern features!?

However, even though it has a retro design, it still has sound quality from the 21st century. The built-in music player is powered by an internal battery that charges using a power outlet.

On the flip side, the alarm clock is powered by a single AA battery. In future models, I'd like to see both the music player and clock powered by the same battery, right!?

What's more, the AA battery for the clock isn't included in your purchase.

There are three hands on the clock; the minute hand, the hour hand, and the alarm hand.

To set an alarm, you turn the knob on the right. Doing so moves the minute's hand, causing the hour hand to follow suit.

When you want to set an alarm, turn the alarm switch to 'on'. Next, turn the left knob until the smaller silver hand is at your desired time.

It's also worth mentioning that some people found it difficult to set an alarm and change the time; however, If you follow the guide I've outlined above, you shouldn't have any issues.

Pros:

  • Doubles up as a music player
  • Great sound quality
  • Two separate knobs for time and alarm
  • Looks like a mini TV from the 1950s

Cons:

  • Requires separate batteries for the time and music player
  • Some customers found it hard to set an alarm

How to Choose the Best Vintage Alarm Clock

Ticking vs Non Ticking

While some people hate the sound of constant ticking while trying to sleep, others find it relaxing. When choosing a vintage alarm clock, it's important to consider which one is right for you.

Otherwise, you'll end up with an alarm clock that keeps you awake all night rather than wakes you up in the morning.

It's also worth mentioning that most of the clocks on this list don't have a built-in ticking mechanism.

Light-Up Feature

Not all vintage alarm clocks are going to have a backlight; however, it's something to look out for. A light-up feature (backlight) allows you to see the time in the dark, which is ideal if you wake up during the night.

The best alarm clocks have a button, letting you choose when to activate the light. This way, you won't have a backlight keeping you up at night.

Size and Weight

While the size and weight aren't going to make much difference when choosing a retro alarm clock, I prefer clocks that are compact and lightweight.

That way, you can bring them on your travels.

On the flip side, if it's going to stay on your bedside cabinet for years, you can go for something bigger and heavier.

Final Verdict

It's not easy to find a reliable vintage alarm clock nowadays. Everywhere you look, there are modern-looking clocks with hundreds of buttons.

For some people, these are great, but nothing beats a great retro clock!

To recap, I recommend the Crosley Corsair Tabletop Alarm Clock. as my top choice. Not only does it look great, but it also comes with a built-in radio and has dual alarms.

What more could you ask for!?

I hope this article has helped you make an informed decision. If you're looking for more classic-looking alarm clocks, be sure to check out the best wind-up alarm clocks.
